Condition. Colour. Finish. Why the smartest hair change for autumn may be more subtle than you think.
Fashion has always loved September.
It is the moment when wardrobes shift, textures become richer and there is an instinctive desire for something new.
Hair follows a similar rhythm.
But after months of sunlight, travelling, swimming, humidity and heat styling, the most interesting question isn’t necessarily:
What should I change?
At Fowler35, we prefer to begin somewhere else.
What does the hair need?
Because sometimes the most transformative change isn’t dramatically different colour or losing several inches of length.
It is restoring condition, refining tone, reconsidering shape and bringing beautiful quality back to the hair.
And intriguingly, that is exactly where the wider beauty conversation is heading.
Hair Health Has Become Luxury
British Vogue recently declared:
“Healthy-looking hair has become one of beauty’s biggest status symbols.”
It’s a small sentence that says a great deal about where hair is moving.
After years dominated by obvious styling trends, the focus is increasingly shifting towards something quieter: condition, shine, movement and beautifully maintained hair.
Harper’s Bazaar has similarly been exploring the current fascination with the “hair health journey”, looking not only at shine but at scalp health, heat exposure and maintaining the integrity of the hair.
For Darren Fowler, Creative Director at Fowler35, that feels less like a new trend and more like a return to good hairdressing.
“When we talk about luxury hair, I don’t think it should mean overworked hair. The colour, condition and cut should work together so the result feels effortless.”
— Darren Fowler
That distinction matters.
Hair can look beautifully polished without looking overly styled everything we promote for Post-summer hair repair and glossy hair at Fowler35 London

The Rise of Glass Hair
One of the clearest beauty stories emerging for autumn is glass hair.
British Vogue called it “Autumn’s Glossiest Trend” in August, describing soft lengths with a mirror-like sheen and highlighting the role colour glosses can play in enhancing colour, softness and surface finish.
And only days later, Vogue returned to gloss again, looking at the soft lustre associated with freshly coloured salon hair.
For us, however, glass hair isn’t simply about applying something shiny.
Beautiful reflection is the result of several things working together:
condition
hydration
the surface of the hair fibre
colour
appropriate homecare
careful heat use
and the quality of the cut
If the hair is depleted after summer, the first step may therefore be treatment rather than styling.
Condition: Treat the Hair in Front of You
There is no single “summer damage treatment” because no two heads of hair have experienced summer in exactly the same way.
Fine highlighted hair may have very different needs from coarse virgin hair affected by humidity.
Curly hair exposed to repeated swimming requires a different conversation again.
This is why diagnosis matters.
Kérastase Fusio-Dose
Fusio-Dose is designed as a personalised professional service rather than a conventional one-size-fits-all mask.
A Concentré addresses the primary hair need and a Booster targets a secondary concern, allowing up to 30 possible combinations according to Kérastase.
At Fowler35, that might mean looking at:
nourishment
shine
blonde repair
frizz
softness
strength
colour radiance
before selecting the treatment.
The point isn’t simply to “have a treatment”.
It is to prescribe the appropriate one with our Kérastase Fusio-Dose treatment for post-summer hair.
Hyaluronic Smoothing
For hair where hydration, frizz and manageability are becoming the bigger conversation, our hyaluronic smoothing treatments offer another option.
Simar’s treatment-led work at Fowler35 concentrates particularly on restoring hydration and manageability while maintaining the hair’s natural movement and integrity.
“After summer I look first at how the hair feels and behaves. If it’s becoming harder to control, rougher or more reactive to humidity, that’s telling us something about what it needs.”
— Simar, Fowler35
And importantly, smoothing doesn’t have to mean removing the personality from the hair.
The goal is hair that performs better — not hair that has been forced into becoming something else.

Colour: Autumn Doesn’t Automatically Mean Darker
This may be our favourite seasonal myth.
September arrives and suddenly everybody assumes blonde must become brunette.
It doesn’t.
One of the most interesting current colour stories is actually transition rather than transformation.
Who What Wear Beauty Editor Eleanor Vousden describes her own approach:
“I always favour a subtle transformation over a whole hair colour makeover.”
Their current autumn edit includes shades such as malted brunette, suede blonde, ribbon brunette and burnt umber, alongside glossy, dimensional finishes.
These shouldn’t be treated as a menu of colours to copy.
They’re useful indicators of a broader movement.
Colour is becoming richer, softer and more dimensional, while still retaining something of summer.
Our approach is to interpret that Autumn 2026 dimensional hair colour at Fowler35 Fitzrovia –
“Beautiful hair begins with understanding the person wearing it.”
— Stefan, Senior Designer & Colour Specialist
A September colour consultation might therefore result in:
correcting unwanted warmth
rebalancing a blonde
introducing a subtle root shadow
restoring brunette richness
adding ribbons of dimension
glossing existing colour
or deliberately doing very little.
Good colour shouldn’t announce the technique.
You should notice the person first.

And Then There Is the Cut
September has always produced an appetite for a haircut.
British Vogue is currently highlighting everything from the butterfly bob to a return of new-season bobs and more expressive shapes. Searches for the butterfly bob, Vogue reported this month, have risen significantly year-on-year.
Who What Wear, meanwhile, is watching the softer whisper fringe, with celebrity hairstylists describing a move towards cuts that are increasingly personalised and designed around natural texture.
One of the most telling observations came from hairstylist Marylle Koken:
“They want a haircut that works for them.”
That could almost be the Fowler35 philosophy.
“A trend should give us an idea, not an instruction. The job is taking the reference and making it work with someone’s face, hair, personality and lifestyle.”
— Darren Fowler
Sometimes that means a completely new shape.
Sometimes it means restoring movement, changing the framing around the face or removing compromised ends while preserving length.
Effortless Is Becoming Interesting Again
There is another fashion signal we particularly like.
ELLE’s Autumn/Winter 2026 runway beauty report announces:
“The era of trying too hard is over.”
On the runways, that translates into natural texture, lived-in movement, softer styling and hair that isn’t excessively controlled. ELLE highlights everything from relaxed bed hair to textured waves and polished side-parted shapes.
For real life, there is an important idea underneath the runway styling:
your haircut should do more of the work.
A beautiful shape shouldn’t require an hour in front of the mirror every morning.
“The best haircut should still make sense when the client is standing in their own bathroom two weeks later. That’s always part of the design.”
— Darren Designer & Colour Specialist
The Fowler35 Autumn Reset
So, what does your hair actually need as summer ends?
Perhaps nothing dramatic.
Maybe it is a carefully prescribed Fusio-Dose.
Perhaps your colour needs its shine and balance restored.
Maybe frizz and hydration have become the priority.
Perhaps a few centimetres and a change around the face would completely alter how your hair moves.
Or perhaps you’re ready for something genuinely new.
The point is not deciding on the service before we’ve looked at the hair.
CONDITION.
COLOUR.
FINISH.
That’s where we begin.
Because going into autumn, the most compelling hair trend isn’t really a single cut or colour.
It’s hair that looks beautifully considered, exceptionally healthy and entirely your own.
